Royal Windermere Yacht Club
Bowness on Windermere
The Royal Windermere Yacht Club is a thriving family club with a membership of 500. Its history is a long one. Regattas on Lake Windermere were recorded as long ago as 1818 and the Windermere Sailing Club was formed in 1860. The Royal Warrant was granted in 1887, Queen Victoria’s Jubilee year. We are priviliged to have His Royal Highness Prince Charles as an honoury life member. The original club house was built in 1889 on the shore of Bowness Bay and the present Club House was built in 1965 on the same site. The Club started one of the first GP fleets in the country, with about a dozen boats in 1952. There are now 30-35 GP’s in the fleet, which are raced regularly on Sundays and Thursday evenings from April to October.
